Book Review: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Powerful Lessons in Personal Change

Stars: 4/5

Although this book was first published in 1989, Covey’s message has stood the test of time and is still applicable decades later. This is evident by the substantial platform of 7 Habits-branded books, workbooks, seminars, etc... launched as a result of the book’s success and mass appeal.
Without going into too much detail, the first six of the seven habits are grouped into two categories. The first three habits are in the ‘Private Victory’ category and deal with introspection and self-mastery. These are areas within oneself that provide opportunity for refinement. These are character building habits that “...move a person from dependence to independence.” p.51.
Once you’ve mastered the first three habits you are ready to move from independence to interdependence. Habits 4, 5 and 6 are in the ‘Public Victory’ category. You move from building character to “...building rich, enduring highly productive relationships with other people.” p.187.
The final habit is called 'Sharpening The Saw' and it encompasses the other six habits. Covey’s thinking here is “....preserving and enhancing the greatest assets you have - you.” p.288. This is accomplished by renewing the physical, spiritual, mental and social/emotional dimensions of oneself. Covey describes how all the habits are related and how self-renewal creates balance and synergy and is optimal for becoming a highly effective individual.
