Book Review: The Black Count

A biography wrapped in a history lesson of the French Revolution.

Stars: 4/5

The protagonist in The Count of Monte Cristo was based on a black man?  Who knew!

The Black Count is an engaging biography of General Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie (aka Alex Dumas), the highest-ranking person of color in the French military. Born to a French Nobleman and a black slave, in what was then called Saint-Dominque, Alexandre Dumas would mature and rise to become one of the greatest generals in what was to become Napolean’s Army. You will follow his journey to its eventual conclusion - a tale that was to remain sequestered if not for Dumas’s son, a novelist, and the dogged research and authorship of Tom Reiss.
