Book Review: The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963

"It's a story that will allow you to laugh, to think and to cry."  Kenny Leon,  Director

Stars: 4/5

“The Watsons....” is a novel story worthy of a recommendation for young readers. Although I am an adult, I wanted to read this book ahead of the TV movie premiere (9/20/13). This edition is a special edition with the actors from movie on the cover and photos from the movie in the middle of the book. This provides an opportunity to put faces on the characters in the story.

Kenny Watson, the 10 year-old middle child of three, narrates throughout; providing the inside scoop on the “Weird Watsons” of Flint, Michigan.. A mostly lighthearted story until the end when the Watsons travel to Birmingham to visit relatives and experience events of a more serious nature. No spoiler alerts here..... but they are black family in Birmingham in 1963.

Curtis’s award-winning recognition for writing books for young readers is well deserved.
