T.S.O.B.F. topic - the veil

I know from speaking with some of you recently that you, like me, have read/re-read The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois. Also, it was suggested that we engage in a thoughtful discussion about the book. So here's a starting point:

What are you thoughts on Du Bois use of the veil as a metaphor? I found that he incorporated it rather well throughout the book.

Here's an excerpt:
“…the Negro…born with a veil, and gifted with second sight…this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others...” from Our Spiritual Strivings

Does this still hold true in today's society? Is this still relevant?

I bought this book a couple months ago and it's been eyeing me from the bookshelf. That double consciousness was working me today. I'm going to get at TSOBF before the summer ends.
